Two weeks ago we were shocked to hear about the Malaysian Airlines #370 jet that seemed to disappear somewhere over the ocean of of southeast Asia. Our hearts go out to the families of the passengers who beg for answers about the fate of their loved ones. It’s amazing that a modern airplane equipped with the latest computerized systems could be lost without a trace, especially when it was being tracked from the ground by air traffic controllers. Theories will continue to swirl until the facts are finally known.
Let’s stop for a moment and think. What if our lives suddenly disappeared too? In a way, that will happen when the end of our lives finally happens.
We are all vulnerable living in this world. While the missing plane is a tragedy, the real tragedy is not that human death happens unexpectedly, but that so many people suddenly face eternity unprepared. Jesus taught the parable of the rich farmer who felt he could live wealthy for many years. (Luke 12:16-21) God told him, “You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?” How many today are like him – not expecting the end soon – and are unprepared? Jesus said it was like this when the flood suddenly arrived in Noah’s day. Most people were simply busy with life’s pleasures and were not prepared. Jesus warned us, “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.” (Matt 24:37-41) We must be prepared at all times through faith in Christ and a life that is lived for Him. Are you ready?
